A piece of news (not yet reported by the Times, BTW) that is astonishing and yet unsurprising, given the real motives for the U.S. invasion/occupation of Iraq: ZNet | Iraq | U.S. Arrests Iraq's Union Leaders
Among other outrages reported in this article: the CPA issued an order (#39) in September that permits 100% foreign ownership of businesses, except for the oil industry, and allows the transfer of profits outside the country; U.S. forces are detaining union organizers without explanation or on trumped-up charges, and are enforcing a 1987 law that forbids the formation of unions in state-owned enterprises (where most---well, those 30% that have jobs---Iraqis work).
Contact your congressional representatives and President non-elect Bush to protest order #39 and the harrassment/suppression of Iraqi unions.
